Reportedly, his mother once told him that if she had known he was going to be so unhappy, she would have aborted him. I guess this gelled pretty well with his outlook however and he later stated, “I’m simply an accident. Why take it all so seriously?”

Sometimes when I get real depressed, Emile Cioran quotes read like punch lines. Other times, when I’m regaining faith in humanity, statements like “Since all life is futility, then the decision to exist must be the most irrational of all,” do not elicit laughs.

I’ve been wearing more makeup lately than I used to, and inevitably, I more often get to hear:

“Oh, you don’t need makeup. You’re beautiful without it!”

And I talk a lot of beauty and loving myself just how I am. Some people feel these two things are hypocritical, to love yourself and wear makeup. And okay, yes, let’s acknowledge that there are women who feel pressured to wear it despite not wanting to. This happens. But a lot of the time, women wear makeup for themselves. It’s fun! It’s expressive. It’s artistic. It’s not “necessary,” but neither is pizza.

I’m not trying to cover anything up the same way an artist isn’t putting paint on a canvas for the sake of covering the canvas.

(Edit: Also, I’m getting calls for people wanting t-shirts of this. If you feel the same, let me know. I would gladly print some of these.)

There’s too much good stuff on Tumblr tonight!

So, on a school trip to Italy we parked next to another tour bus filled with kids about our age or younger. While waiting to get going to our next stop, we ended up having a staredown with the ginger kid and his floppy haired friend. After a few moments of intense staring, someone lifted their hand to the window to display their Game Boy.

With that, someone from our bus pulled out their Game Boy and waved it next to the window as well. Within moments, the entire other bus had children clamouring to the side. all with arms outstretched and game cartridges and consoles pressed eagerly against the glass, each one smiling and waving as our bus erupted with laughter.

The bus eventually pulled away and we never saw them again, but I will always remember this as one of the funniest moments on our trip.

Eighteen guys did this and twelve descended further to find out that moon dust smells like gunsmoke. Every single one of them came back irrevocably changed. America had sent the squarest motherfuckers it could find to the moon and the moon sent back humans. Armstrong became a teacher, then a farmer. Alan Bean became a painter. Edgar Mitchell started believing in UFOs. And also managed to crystallize the experience of seeing your entire planet at once:

Today is Fred Korematsu Day.

FRED KOREMATSU (1/30/1919-3/20/2005) was a Japanese-American who resisted internment during World War II. The ACLU picked up his case as a way to challenge the legality of internment; Korematsu was charged and convicted of violating military orders.

Not until much later in his life was Korematsu’s name cleared and his cause vindicated. After uncovering new evidence that reports from the FBI saying Japanese-Americans posed no threat had been suppressed, Korematsu’s conviction was overturned.

In 1998, President Bill Clinton awarded him with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, saying “In the long history of our country’s constant search for justice, some names of ordinary citizens stand for millions of souls. Plessy, Brown, Parks…to that distinguished list, today we add the name of Fred Korematsu.”

Late in life, Korematsu also spoke out against the U.S. government’s practices at Guantanamo Bay and other sites, saying that if we learn anything from his story, it should be that imprisoning people without charge merely because they “look” like an enemy, and helped write amicus curiae briefs filed in cases against the federal government on behalf of U.S. citizens held at Guantanamo.
